Which solid flooring is best for Wirral rooms?

There are so many choices of solid flooring, and this can make it difficult to choose the best one for rooms in your Wirral home or business.

A brief history of Wirral floor coverings

In the 15th Century, most homes were covered in white clay overlaid with rushes. This was not healthy as floors were contaminated with food droppings and the effects of animals kept indoors for too long. As you can imagine, houses did not smell too pleasant in those days!

After the Black Death infected thousands of people, households began to sweep their floors. A cloth was more practical than rushes, as it could easily be taken outside to shake off the debris. In more wealthy households, a simple cloth was replaced by rugs and carpets. Wealthy homeowners could also afford stone tiles or solid wood flooring.

In 1860, Frederick Walton invented linoleum or lino to cover ship decks. He soon realised that it could be used in homes. From the late 19th Century until the 1950s, lino was a popular floor covering in Wirral homes. It was practical, durable, easy to clean, non- flammable and inexpensive.

Stone tile, carpets, linoleum, and wood floor coverings remain popular choices, but other solid floor coverings have been developed.

Engineered flooring

Engineered flooring has many layers of timber. It is an alternative to wood flooring. Unlike solid wood, it can resist moisture so can be installed in kitchens and bathrooms.

Unlike hardwood flooring, it can be used with underfloor heating as high temperatures will not warp the engineered wood.

LVT

Luxury vinyl tiles or LVT are made to resemble wood or stone tiles, but are more durable and waterproof. They are easy to clean with a brush or mop and feel warmer underfoot than wood or stone tiles. They can also be used with underfloor heating.

Laminate flooring

Laminate flooring has the texture and look of wood or stone but is less costly. Laminate is easy to install, clean and is pet proof. It’s an ideal choice for people who want a good looking floor on a limited budget.

Wood and stone flooring

Some people prefer the traditional natural look of solid hardwood and stone tile flooring.

Solid wood is a traditional flooring that lasts a long time. It can become worn looking after a few years of heavy use, but can be restored to look like new with professional floor sanding.

There are a number of wood types to choose from, including oak, bamboo and pine. Solid wood floors are varnished to protect them and can be stained to change their colour.

Stone tiles are a popular choice for kitchens and bathrooms. They can be expensive, but will last a lifetime, making them cost-effective in the long term.

The best choice

There is no single ‘best choice’ when selecting solid flooring for your Wirral rooms. Your choice depends on your budget, style preferences and the room type.

Your Wirral flooring installer will advise you on the best type of solid flooring to complement your lifestyle and type of home.
