Sanding and white paint creates ‘shabby chic’ floor

Interior design enthusiast Elaina Sanches, in a Daily Star interview, described how she turned her old wood flooring into a stressed white floor, emulating the popular ‘shabby chic’ style.

After completing the transformation, she said:

“My flooring looks lovely. Hard work and I can feel my arms this morning!”

Sanches first sanded the floor, before painting it with chalk paint and then sanding it by hand to achieve the distressed look. She did not use a machine for the second sanding as it would have removed the paint, and a wax finish was added to protect the floor.

She posted photos of her floor on Instagram and received many positive comments, including:

“That looks amazing!”

“Just wow, wow-zer love.”

There are many rooms with wood flooring in Cheshire homes. Wood is a long-lasting floor covering, though after a few years it can begin to show signs of wear. This can be fixed with floor sanding.

Sanches did the sanding of her floor herself – as she wanted a distressed look, she did not need the floor professionally sanded. For a fresh new look, however, floor sanding is best done by professional floor sanders using specialised equipment.

A freshly sanded wood floor that has a protective finish is easier to clean, as dust and dirt don’t cling to the surface. Cleaning will also remove viruses that are a health risk to those living in the home. When selling a house, a renovated wood floor can add considerable value to the property.
