Research highlights the value of home improvements

A recent study conducted by Zopa has underlined the fact that various home improvements can add a lot of value to a house.

Zopa discovered that the addition of a conservatory could add in excess of £5,000 to the value of a residential property, while professional carpet cleaning could make a difference of about £2,000, on average.

Home improvements do not just contribute to the value of a house, it was claimed; they can also make living in a home a pleasanter experience than it would otherwise be, which is why people may be tempted to pay for carpet cleaning in North Wales, for example.

A report on the study in the Daily Mail said that carpets are sometimes professionally cleaned because lasting stains can make a room look unattractive, and carpets that are discoloured or worn can make a house appear old.

The research found that the usual return on carpet cleaning was slightly higher than the typical return on some other home improvements. For instance, investing in a new kitchen might not have quite as much of an impact on the value of a property per pound spent. Similarly, bathroom investment might not generate value to the same degree.

Zopa, which provides loans for the purpose, has pointed out that interest rates are currently on the low side.

Giles Andrews, the chief executive officer of the company, has said:

“With the latest housing market reports showing the market to be slowing down, home owners could add significant value by looking at ways to improve their current homes, rather than move.”
