Prolonging the life of hardwood floors

Hardwood flooring is the ideal solution for homeowners who want their home to be as beautiful as possible, as well as adding value to their property. Although hardwood flooring can be slightly more expensive than other options, with a little care and attention it will outlast its competitors and even get better with age.

The following tips will help anyone with hardwood flooring in Liverpool to ensure they have the most attractive, long-lasting flooring:

Keep flooring clean

It is highly likely that if you have gone to the time and expense of having hardwood flooring installed that you will make some effort to keep it clean too, but if you do not clean your floors quite as regularly as you should, now is the time to start.

Keeping dust and moisture off your flooring will help to avoid damage such as small scratches, discolouration and lifting or warped wood.

The ideal way to clean hardwood flooring is to sweep it daily. If you prefer to vacuum, make sure you are using a vacuum with brushes that won’t damage your flooring.

It is also a good idea to mop your floors once or twice a week, but be mindful that leaving water on your floor for too long could cause them to warp, meaning that any spillages should be cleaned up quickly.

Minimize UV light exposure

UV light can fade your hardwood flooring if it is exposed for long enough and in sufficient quantities. Of course, your floor will change colour over the years no matter what, but if you want to keep it looking as good as it does now for as long as possible, using rugs, blinds, curtains and furniture to limit your floor’s exposure to the harsh rays of the sun will really help.

If you would prefer, you can also install UV filtering film to your windows, which will really help to prevent discoloration of not only your flooring, but also your wallpaper and any wooden furniture you may have.

Scuff-proof your furniture

Sliding furniture is one of the biggest causes of scratches and scuffs to a hardwood floor. You can easily remedy this by using rubber casters on the bottom of chair legs, couches etc.

Regular sanding and finishing

Finally, by regularly sanding your flooring and having it varnished, you can maintain a fresh, new-looking floor which will be the envy of all. You can even employ an expert in floor sanding to do this for you if you prefer.
