How to care for hardwood flooring

Hardwood flooring is popular in Wirral homes and workplaces because of its natural luxury look and durability. With a little maintenance and care, wood floors can continue to look great for a long time.

Regular vacuuming and mopping with a micro-fibre cloth removes dust, dirt and light stains, while spills should be wiped up as soon as possible. During the coronavirus crisis, floors can be disinfected as a precaution. In busy commercial rooms, daily cleaning may be necessary.

Pets are fine with wood floors, but their saliva is acidic and can stain wood. To protect the floor, pet owners should put drinking bowls on a mat or in a room without a wooden floor. Some breeds of cats and dogs have long claws that could scratch the wood, so regularly clip their nails.

After a while, hardwood floors in busy households and commercial buildings can show scratches, dents and stains. Some people prefer this look and purchase distressed timber flooring that is made to look old and worn. Planks made from reclaimed timber that show signs of wear are also popular.

If you prefer your worn floor to look like new, damage is easily fixed. Scratches and dents can be filled with wood filler or sanded and re-varnished.

Professional floor sanding makes floors look like new again. After sanding, coat the timber with a protective polyurethane solution.

Hardwood flooring is for those who love the luxury and beauty of natural wood but who are happy to give their floors a little extra care.
