Glow-in-the-dark flooring provides extra safety

For poor visibility areas, or places where emergency evacuations may need to be made in the dark, flooring manufacturers have developed glow-in-the-dark flooring.

In floors where there are safety issues, or where floors are subject to fluid spills, it is normal practice to use nonslip flooring that prevents accidents. Another safety issue is being able to see in non-lit areas or when normal lighting fails.

The Netherlands flooring company Bolidt has created Bolideck Glow, a glow-in-the-dark floor covering. Targeted at the shipping market, the floor covering incorporates solar cells that store energy during the day that can be used for bright illumination at night. As well as saving energy, the feature performs a safety function as it makes it easier for passengers to find their way in the dark in an emergency evacuation.

The Royal Caribbean cruise line is installing the glow-in-the-dark floor coverings to several of its ships, with a view towards improving safety in the event of an emergency.

Glow-in-the-dark floor coverings are not yet widely available for British business premises. For contract flooring in Wirral businesses, it is possible to find tape that glows in the dark. Care homes often place glow-in-the-dark tape to line the edges of corridors to help elderly people find their way if there is a fire and visibility is reduced by smoke. These tapes help, but do not provide the high illumination levels of the glow-in-the-dark floor coverings that are being developed for use in business premises.
