Companies announce ‘colour of the year’ for 2017

Towards the end of the year, several companies that sell interior decoration products announce their colour of the year for the following year. They seldom agree on each other’s choice.

The American flooring retailer Shaw Floors has announced that ‘lush’ is its colour of the year. Lush is a shade of green similar to grass and leaves that the firm says “brings the outdoors in”. Shaw Floors’ creative director, Debbie Houston’ declared lush to be “nature’s neutral”. On hardwood and laminate floors, Shaw says, lush-coloured rugs complement the browns of natural wood.

Sherwin-Williams Paints, also in the U.S., has decided that the colour of the year for 2017 is poised taupe, which is a shade of grey. The company describes this colour as “bringing a sense of sanctuary into the home”.

The well-known paint company Dulux has decided that denim drift is its choice for 2017 colour of the year. Denim drift, as its name suggests, is the colour of denim jeans. Walls and furniture of such a colour go well with grey laminate floors.

When deciding on new solid flooring in your Wirral home, should you be influenced by these colours of the year? The CMG organisation is made up of design professionals and meets several times a year to discuss colour trends. Mark Woodman, a member of the group, says that colours of the year are about a “direction not dictation”. He added:

“There are no wrong colours, just colours done wrong.”
