Choosing the best solid flooring in North Wales

There are many options for solid wood flooring in North Wales and this can make it difficult to choose the best one without guidance.

You will need a budget for flooring. Solid wood flooring costs from around £25 a square metre, but you could pay upwards of £60 a square metre. Your flooring supplier will be able to provide an accurate quote. You will also need to budget for fitting.

Underfloor heating

Underfloor heating can cause timber to crack or shrink. You need to be sure that your heating system and the solid wood planks are compatible. You are probably better of using engineered wood which has a natural wood veneer on other layers. Many types of engineered wood are suitable for underfloor heating.

Solid wood does not like too much water. Of course, it rains a lot in North Wales, so a moisture absorbent mat is recommended for the doorway to trap drips from clothes and shoes.

Solid wood is not advisable for bathrooms, kitchen, and utility areas which are regularly wet. If you want the wood look in these areas, choose laminate or luxury vinyl tiles with a wood effect pattern.

Wood choices

Most solid wood flooring is made from kiln-dried timber cut into planks. They can be purchased treated or untreated for the installer to stain or oil. Lacquers and stains can change the shade of the wood to fit in with the rooms décor.

Solid flooring comes in various grades. Many planks will have knots, colour variations and different markings. If you want the wood to look flawless, you will have to pay extra.

You can also buy wider than average planks, and distressed effects that make the wood look old and authentic.

Environmental issues

If you are concerned about the environment, make sure that the wood comes from sustainable forest sources. Reclaimed and salvaged wood planks are both environmentally friendly and attractive, but you may have to pay a little more.

Though solid wood flooring is more expensive than alternatives, it will last a long time. After a few years, it can look worn but can be restored by sanding. Regular brushing helps keep the floor looking good. A weekly wipe over with a well-wrung mop and a cleaner formulated for solid wood will do it a world of good.

Minor scratches can easily be sanded, but you will need to coat the area with the oil of lacquer used on the rest of the floor.

It is perhaps better not to walk on wood floors with high heels, as they can scratch the wood. Pads should be placed under heavy furniture to prevent damage, and be sure to life furniture around the room rather than pushing it and allowing it to scrape across the floor.

Solid wood flooring is not easy to fit by inexperienced people. The company that sells wood flooring will be able to fit the flooring for you.

Solid flooring in your North Wales home or workplace is a fine choice if you want a naturally good looking floor that will last for many years.
